Booking process - an infrequent perspective

I've just booked a one way flight for my partner and I from Palermo to Heathrow in early September. As many of you may know from my posts, I'm an infrequent leisure flyer, paying about 2/3 of my flights (usually F or J) with Avios.

However in this case we needed a one way back from Sicily as an easy end to a European rail holiday. Here are a few random points I've noticed:

  • There was a big discrepancy in price from HBO ET to CE (86E to 427E).
  • There was one (sadly only one) CE seat left for Avios at a steal of only 12750 Avios plus about 25E IIRC. Sadly I needed two, and the second was 427E!
  • You can't upgrade with Avios many ET bookings, including mine. News to me. Saves me the job of keeping checking to see if I can get two seats in CE I suppose.
  • I changed my seat preferences to Aisle and my partner's to 'no preference' as a hope to get two seats by an aisle as the wiki on the HBO thread says choices in EC try to be respected.
  • We paid 86E each (about £66). What a steal ^
  • Can I confirm the food is a large wrap? The flight is 3.00 hours.
  • If there are any cash upgrade offers that come available, can anyone say how they are displayed under my bookings? At the moment it is over 800E for the two of us. I'm not too bothered anyway at the price we paid, but I could be tempted

I'd really welcome any comments or tips on the above from more experienced members. Thanks
