I don't know Linux but it seemed to me it is some kind of distributed thing too - each seat in C/F has its own computer and access some kind of file server for the movies. I did not see the Penguin during the reboot though.
Same for Y. Some systems distribute/cache more of the content to the seats rather than keeping it only on the head-end server but that is less common.
