Matshakatini Nature Reserve

Matshakatini Nature Reserve

Closest commercial airport : none within 150 km.

The reserve forms a narrow strip along the southern banks of the Limpopo River, just west of and contiguous with the Makuleke CNP. It is part of the Madimbo (Military) Corridor, the strip of land along the river which once upon a time was the SA Defense Force’s first line of defense against the black hordes from the north. It was declared a nature reserve at the SADF’s request. Given its past, one might expect Matshakatini to be environmentally compromised, but the SADF actually has a pretty good track record when it comes to managing nature reserves. Hoedspruit Air Force Base, for example, is a declared nature reserve with such animals as sable and white rhino, and even cheetah (to keep the runways clear of warthogs. Really!).

Ecologically, Matshakatini comprises of alluvial plains and sandveld communities.

There are no facilities for visitors that I am aware of.
