Yes, that doesn't make any sense at all. Weather was fine in Atlanta, so the aircraft wouldn't need a huge reserve and the flight is maybe 1600nm with a tailwind to boot. Seems odd.
JFK-SFO when the jetstream is really strong is one thing, but a 738 shouldn't ever have that issue on LAX-ATL.
But what about the weather enroute - there has been some nasty weather
in Texas Oklahoma Arkansas and Missouri of recent requiring a flight to
vector around that. Tail winds are great but you can't use them to fly thru
bad weather.
