Waited 20 minutes (per instruction as she said) and 3rd reset was the charm - it started playing the "commercial" and demo. She waited for them to finish then the system returned to a good state

That was about 1 hour after take off - we were already having our salads in BF by then.

That got me curious...these systems do seem kind of finicky and resetting, which seems to be the only way to correct problems for the FAs, takes a long time.

Is this just the nature of these systems (this does not seem to be unique to UA)? Why can't they make these systems more reliable software wise (I am sure hardware is very strict after the SR111 tragedy)? Why the wait between the resets? Do the passengers pushing buttons during the reset really hurt the system?

Of course, in C and F, with the system powered down, one can't do the FA call button nor control the overhead lights.

They can definitely reset the whole system, or by specific seat. I would imagine by cabin is also an option. I profess to not being an engineer or IT systems guy, so have no idea how they work inside, but I imagine, although the system itself is obviously different than a computer/laptop/tablet, I'd guess resetting these systems isn't really much different...it forces it to shut down and restarts it.

Sort of OT, perhaps, but I was on SQ SFO-HKG-SIN about 3 weeks ago, on the new type of IFE they have, and the remote was working for my seat and my wife's - though the guy's next to us was. Were notified at check in, and also worked by touchscreen, so it wasn't all bad, but being in the bulkhead, it was a far reach and bit of a PITA. For HKG-SFO, we asked if they could try and fix it. They did something under my wife's seat, and tried to reset our individual systems a couple of times - the last one took it offline completely, so had zero IFE. Whoops - wish we hadn't asked that after the fact.
