It's not that they help lighten the load. More then help organize things and condenses things so that you can make it all fit. At the same time, helps to keep your clothing relatively wrinkle free.
Edited to add: One other thing - it's great for getting to things quickly when you need it. I always hated having to scrounge around my bag for that shirt packed at the bottom. Now I just grab the folder with my shirts.
