Choice Privileges changes hard to soft expiration: bank Choice points to top off CP?

Choice Privileges is changing their former policy of expiring all points at the end of the year after the year in which the points were earned. You will soon be able to keep your Choice points alive indefinitely by having activity every 18 months. See the discussion at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/choic...on-policy.html

Because of this change I now plan to accumulate a stash of Choice points which I can transfer to Southwest whenever I am short of Companion Pass qualifying points at the end of a year. It might even make sense as part of a January points dump to earn a 23-month Companion Pass.

The caveat is that Choice has a history of making adverse changes with little or no advance notice. The option to transfer to Southwest could be devalued again or even eliminated, and we would have no recourse. So I can't recommend accumulating a stash of Choice points unless you can afford to lose most of their value overnight at any time. You need to strike your own risk/reward balance.
