Indeed. On my last trip, I had two checked pieces I didn't need until my final destination, with stopovers in Tokyo and Osaka, so I just paid ~$30 to ship them from NRT to KIX, which worked our great logistically for us since we were taking the shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Kyoto. Would've paid more in storage, lost time to pick them up, and they even had the pieces on a cart ready to go at KIX. ^
