I had booked Etihad for my mother over other airlines thinking the experience would be better, but never again!

(bolding mine). The OP says 'extra bag'. Did the OP's mother have 2 carry on's and the second was larger than the personal item size? And that if they had told him at the check in counter that one was oversized he could have put all of the stuff in one bag and take the 'extra bag' home?
