This is what my Nevsky Palace scary story was about, too. It's not just the Astoria. And frankly, if this is the sort of thing that goes on, then I'd be pretty happy to see the metal detectors!

The Astoria rooms are small, but at least they're bigger than the standard rooms at the National in Moscow (only time I've ever paid over $200/night for a room with a single bed!)

Wow! Julie, I absolutely agrese, Nevsky Palace is a scary place. Let me just say that Sheraton Palace in Moscow also saw a murder of some mid level banker from the suburbs who was using one of Sheraton's rooms for a weekday retreat. Anyway, the murder happened when Monica Selec was staying there for the Kremlin CUP, and she moved out immediately after that. Talk about bad luck for Sheratons in Russia!

On the other note, I know you mentioned in your other post that you are about to stay at the National in Moscow, how was that (aside from $200 for a single bed, which I assume is totally expected in Moscow). Can you believe that they only offer ONE glass of champagne with their brunch?! I am now sold on Marriott Grand with their fabulous Sunday Brunch and better room prices Im sorry you didn't get a chance to experience BA to DME...hopefully SVO didn't treat you too badly. Next time try DME! Happy Travels
