Am I just asking for trouble if I try to bring a tripod w/ my carry-on?

I have a camera bag that allows me to attach my tripod externally to the bag. I know that things like golf clubs, ski poles, etc are not permitted, so I am going to assume that a tripod is probably out of the question.

any one have firsthand experience?
