I know CX would cancel reservation that violates the married segments, i.e. people book the married segments then switch out the unwanted segment and put back the wanted segment that if originally was there, the long haul segment availability would not show. However those are reservations during the 5 days AA hold, not ticketed awards.

Exactly how yours being canceled and what were the eventual outcome? Did you get rebooked?
Sorry I completed messed up... I meant.... 1 of 4 award tickets with CX (in 2015) was messed up in some way including cancelled or denied boarding pass at check in due to overbooking.

It was always just simple 1-connection flights to/from LAX on Cathay, so I don't think there would be married segment problem (I wouldn't know regardless because I just feed the flight detail to the booking agent).

The other problem (unrelated to this thread actually) was with an AA award hold on CX, it got cancelled before the deadline without me being notified by CX or AA, causing one of the segments to become unavailable. AA never fixed it for me, I had to re-build the itinerary/schedule.
