Sorry I guess I still wasn't clear—it's a round trip SFO-MUC; there's just one checkbox for both SFO-ORD and ORD-MUC (and also just one for MUC-ORD and ORD-SFO). I only want to change MUC-SFO and only check MUC-SFO before searching, and then only select a new MUC-SFO routing, but on the summary page it refares SFO-ORD and ORD-MUC (without changing flights for those) unbidden.

I shouldn't have said anything about transfer at all perhaps.

On united.com, you can't -- you can only see it at booking. It requires purchasing a paid service to see them after booking.
Strange! What is that service? And why?
