I'm going guess it is the fare rules and the change is due combinability of fares?

When you say "transfer", are you referring to a fare break?

How did you change the selected segment -- change times, fare class, ....
Did the unselected segment change to higher or lower than before?
Did it change to agree with the selected segment ?

Dealing in the abstract is going to make this difficult to discuss.
