Single hop from MEL to Cairns, about 1500 miles due south, 3 hr flight. Like flying from Boston to Miami.

I wouldnt stay in Cairns- rent a car, pick a beach resort up around Port Douglas.

You could fly CNS-SYD-LAX on the return to avoid 'backtracking' to MEL, but it really isnt much different. more of a 'ticket cost and schedule' issue.
