We haven't done this, but we have used miles for hotels quite extensively. In fact, just did one about 5 minutes ago. Quite a good deal.

Unless a mistake happens (and they can), you will not receive credit from any hotel program for third-party-booked stays like this. All of their T&C (Hilton, Hyatt, Starwood, at least) explicitly exclude this.
