Sorry, this is a positive thing. Many hotels around the world will not allow entry without a reservation for accommodation or dining. The same would happen if you were in Egypt, Thailand, Bali or even trying to enter some hotels in the UAE.

How odd. I have never heard of it in my life despite having travelled extensively in 3 of the four places you mention.
If may be called security, but it also called a lost business opportunity.
