Had to do it once in December due to a severely delayed flight. Left my bag and left the airport. I genuinely had no choice. Returned 6 hours later and collected it within 15 minutes. Form filled in, through the staff security with a BA rep (need passport), taken to the baggage area and located it. Tags are checked and then you leave via international arrivals.
