I've always found the airport agents are more helpful and more willing to think outside the box. For example, I was in SJC when fog shut everything down. I had two backup plans to get to PHX, one from OAK and the other from SMF. The GAs were more than willing to switch me over at no cost. I just had to get myself to OAK or SMF.

It's not that the phone agents are unwilling to make changes, I just think the folks at the airport have a better big picture view of what's going on.
