You might also want to try UA's Economy Plus seating which, according to my husband has one more inch than Air NZ.

These can't be pre-booked unles you have status, but they you can request it when checking in and you might be lucky.

I have flown all three airlines to and from SYD and LAX and my preference for comfort and service is Air NZ.
