That's the rigorous way to do it.

This is a feature to add to the web/ped updates-desired thread. Some carriers may have a x seats remaining at this price notice in the itinerary selection screen. Delta.com and AA.com do, for sure.

If the OP is really concerned he can book by phone. Agents do joint ticket purchases all the time. Not just paid+award, but 'I'm flying from SEA but my sister is coming from LAS and we need to arrive at the same time,' stuff.
