First of all the good: they give you free toothpaste and you get a fast internet connection without having to logon with a password. I would highly recommend the onsite restaurant Palmira for breakfast, after a horrible stay, the gentlemen serving and preparing the food made up for the stay. As a Diamond, I was able to order off the menu.
The bad... I flew in on a red-eye and checked in at 530am to get 4 hours of sleep before i headed off to my meeting. I called the day before to make sure my room would be held, as I have had my rooms cancelled before when I didn't check in by midnight. The hotel and room were decent, nothing spectacular, but it was close to the airport and I was just going to sleep a few hours. The hotel and rooms are old and it shows. The AC makes a lot of noise, the refrigerator rattles...
On check in, it appeared that my reservation had been cancelled - despite my call previously, the front desk agent was confused as to why I would be trying to check in at 530am instead of trying to check out at that time. We had to explain and fix the reservation. I asked about renovated rooms and construction. I was told that although some rooms had been renovated, they would not be available until May 2016. Although the rooms are done, they need to get fire marshall to inspect them before they can be used.
At 7:00am sharp, I started to hear "tap tap tap" - at first I thought it was loud neighbors hitting the wall. "no big deal" I thought, but this persisted, and became louder and was accompanied by a symphony of banging, drilling, and other undescribeable construction noises. I called the front desk and the manager was not available so a message was left for her. I asked if the construction crew could work on a room not directly above me. To my surprise, after about 5 min, the noise subsided and I tried to go back to sleep.
7:30am "knock knock knock... housekeeping" - I thought it was next door as I had put a do not disturb hanger on my door. The knocking persisted and housekeeping was there to clean my room bright and early. Apparently there is no one that lets them know if people check out or not so they just go down the hall room by room. At this point my morning was shot.
I went downstairs and spoke to the manager - whom I assumed knew about my situation from my previous "less than happy" phone call, but she didn't. She was nice offered me some points for the inconvenience, but I asked to have my stay credited which she did.
At this point I was irritated, sleepy, and had a headache. I went to Palmira to eat. The restaurant is very nice - I was surprised that there were very few people there. I was greeted warmly with a nice cup of coffee. I ordered the Protein Breakfast - Steak and Eggs thinking I would get a dried tasteless piece of meat with a side of eggs. It was really good and presented nicely. The breakfast and hospitality of the gentlemen serving saved the stay.
I may try again after their renovations, but until then, I would avoid - especially as the Hyatt Place LAX almost as close and cheaper. The rooms there are new clean and spacious. It's less than 10 min away from LAX.
