I'm no expert, but those fares seem a bit strange to me. The fare between Hong Kong International Airport and Macau should work out to about 46 AUD for one adult, and between Macau and Hong Kong at about 28 AUD for one adult. Child fares are less, but only by about 20% for age 2-12 and by 40% for age below 2.
As for the $1 fare, you might be thinking of the Star Ferry between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, which really is a ferry and not to be confused with the high-speed boats on the above routes.
