FWIW I just had an hour long audio only Skype call with a friend who is in Zanzibar. He was going off his 3G/4G prepaid connection. Quality was better than a lot of landline calls I've been on. We first tried WhatsApp, which he said uses less data, but the mobile carrier there apparently blocks it.
