That all makes sense. Although, it's got me thinking about another way to go about this:

I'm currently Silver Medallion w/ Delta. I'm moving from Minneapolis to Chicago in the next few months, and I am considering getting my status matched with United (if possible). If I do that, and I then purchase this flight as a Y fare, would I get an automatic upgrade to Business if there is availability? Would that work if I have a companion? That could save me quite a bit.

Edit: Nevermind. Unless I'm missing something, I see that CPUs don't apply to flights to Australia/NZ.
