I read through each page in this thread and didn't see a scenario matching my question.
Step 1: Back in October I booked a multi leg itinerary, all on UA via ual.com and paid for the ticket. Let's say booking was made at 10:00.
Step 2: 10 hours later (at 20:00), I decided to swap a flight, which resulted in paying $13 more for the ticket (additional fare collected).
Step 3: At 07:00 next day 21 hours later (from Step 1), I decided to cancel the entire itinerary via ual.com. All flights booked were within 24 hours including those in step 2.
Step 4: Received email confirmation that request has been received.
Today: I learned that the chargeback to my credit card was not processed. Call UA to inquire. They claim that because of the flight change in Step 2 I was not eligible for a full refund.

Question: Since all flights were cancelled within 24 hours of the first flight booking, shouldn't I be entitled to a full refund?
If not, shouldn't I receive some residual airfare credit for a future flight?
