HAMPTON (VA) - Nathan Osburn began to itch.
The Roanoke resident - a law enforcement officer in town for a funeral - first chalked it up to a detergent allergy from the sheets in his Hampton hotel room. But the next morning, he noticed bug bites and then, little bugs in the bed.
When he saw a doctor, he discovered he had pubic lice, more commonly known as crabs.
Now, Osburn, 26, is suing the corporation that owns the Quality Inn & Suites at Mercury Boulevard and Coliseum Drive for $1 million. He says he became infested with the crab lice during his one-night stay at the hotel in August 2001, causing him to suffer physical and emotional injury as well as embarrassment. He also said he wants people to know that staying in a reputable hotel might not guarantee them a clean bed.
...MCHD Hampton Corp. said in court documents that there is no "implied warranty under Virginia law running from a hotel owner or operator to a guest warranting that the premises are 'fit for human habitation, would be clean and sanitary, and would be suitable for occupancy.'"
