Also ESTAs do not carry across to a new passport - they are linked to a specific passport number and if you change your passport you need to apply for a new one. You can't change the passport number for an exiting ESTA. That is something you should really have checked yourself beforehand.
I'm interested to hear why BA being operationally incompetent by not bothering to reissue a ticket is the OP's fault?
