Conundrum. Should I be loyal to my airline and less time at destination? Or...?
I get free flights from work and the liberty to fly anywhere for the weekend (price within reason). I've racked up about 50k DL miles in 3 months of traveling. I am anticipating about 75k miles of traveling in the next 3 months just on Delta. For one trip it's just a MR to SE Asia, but multiple trips from the east coast to Europe for the weekend.
I am currently platinum with Delta. I'm looking at flying to Africa in a few months and from my initial research it seems that SkyTeam has flights going into places such as Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan (particularly interested in Africa because I was a Econ, Poli Sci, and History major). Even Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon have long layovers on Delta. If I went from Thursday to Friday, I would barely get anytime in these countries. Maybe 12-15hrs most.
But flights via Star Alliance have shorter layover flights going and coming back. Should I take these instead? I would at least get a day and half at my destination. They are primarily Lufthansa, and United Metal.
Seeing how there are very few benefits of flying SkyTeam internationally as a Plat (I guess club access is important as a SkyTeam Elite).
I'm young... Less than 25, I have my whole life to acquire status, but not to visit all these different countries. Thoughts? Did I answer my own question?
