Granted it doesn't mean it's policy, but I often use my tray table prior to the door being closed. Now if the try is still deployed during taxi and take-off, then I'd expect them to say something.

Using it as a Wide Load Shield is smart. Unfortunately it's also needed for the other rows! Maybe there needs to be a sizer you have to navigate BEFORE getting on board.
