I once got pinged by this, even though I was on the airbridge, since the agent hadn't scanned my boarding pass properly. I did vaguely consider asking the airport authorities to broadcast a correction notice a week later.
I agree that BA's moral compass won't be badly disturbed by this, if they can find it.
