Public transit is certainly less expensive but with two big checked bags it will be difficult. And yes - you were correct. It takes fur different trains to get from JFK->EWR.
  • JFK Airtran -> Jamaica
  • LIRR -> NY Penn Station
  • NJ Transit -> EWR Rail station
  • EWR Airtrain -> Terminal
There should be enough time to make that connection if flights are running on-time.

If it's not too late to do so perhaps you can change the ticket to the ANA flight to IAH and then a much easier connection IAH-ATL?
