Another sneaky squirrel thing to do is to use your US GSM phone in Europe as a brick of a pager.. .Divert your incoming calls to voice mail. Since the calls DO NOT even attempt to ring while roaming they will not even get routed/or charged via the roaming carrier. Leave your phone on with the divert active. When someone leaves a message, you will get a voicemail alert....call them back on a landline (cheaper) or another phone with a prepay SIM. This worked quite well when I was in Russia for a few weeks (and horrible roaming rates). Most networks, uhh neglect to charge for the voice mail indicator reciept (even though it's really just a text message)
