I also found the I2000plus to be reliable but big and ugly. I just purchased a dual-band Motorola from Nextel that is much smaller. You just need to swap the SIM card from your US phone to the dual-band when you travel.

I'll be trying it on a trip to Paris next month and will let you know how it works.
