Use a travel agent and they should provide you uniform receipts.

I know what you mean when you say AA receipts are sometimes incomprehensible. I sometimes need to say "that's all AA gave me". It's sometimes more about matching a charge to evidence on a date than getting everything 100%. It seems to meet their burden of proof. Even if it does drive them mad.
