You can definitely make another change for free within 24 hours of making a change (but outside of the original 24 hours after purchase). I ended up making changes on three consecutive days to a flight last summer, but only had to pay for the first one. I've never tried to cancel within 24 hours of making a change, so I'm not sure how it would work.
Is this because you're diamond? I called the US number and an overseas number and they would not make a change without charging me a fee even though my last change was ~12 hours ago.
