I briefly glanced at the technology they use for hotel laundries. Basically it's a huge quantity of chlorine bleach, which is why they don't have colored sheets --- the color would bleach to white anyway.

This does disinfect everything pretty well. As others have pointed out, there is a residual that some are sensitive to, but it is a hygienic process, generally.
