I don't know how long you've been GGL, but Special Services escorts are not part of the GGL programme and are not 'usually there'. They may turn up unexpectedly from time to time but the are not a 'to order' perk of GGL status.
I generally call the GL line and ask if they can help, especially when I have a tight connection or other reason for assistance. Admittedly I've only had it proactively offered to me at LAX and JFK before. If I don't need assistance, as is the case 9/10 then I don't bother. Where I've had a problem in T5 I've always approached the SS desk and they've helped. It might not be an advertised perk of the GL service but they certainly help when they can.
