Ok, granted I don't fly as much as most people on FT, but I have mass market suitcases (ala Samsonite or Heys, etc) that have lasted me years with only scuffing being the real damage. One had some threading slightly freyed, but still in very usable condition.
That said, I'd be curious as to see how long some of these higher end bags do last.
My B&R bag is going strong after almost 20 years. It's been all over the world. Usually carried on, occasionally checked. Sometimes used like a briefcase after landing. Biggest/only complaint is that measurement wise fits the sizer but needs to be angled to get it in or out. Very irritating. Only stopped once (LHR, within Europe flight) and had to "prove" it fit. Security person very surprised. Probably has earned its keep but still going strong. Have heard from someone in the luggage business that Tumi doesn't hold up but no direct knowledge about that.
