Does a towel on a chair “hold” the chair at the pool until you return?

When another Flyertalker mentioned that they were getting up at 6am to put towels on chairs by the pool to hold them until they returned, I posted the following which I strongly believe.

This pratice P's me off. I just move the towels and sit down. If someone shows up w/in a hour, fine I'll move, if not no way is some towel going to hold a chair. I've seen too many towel clad chairs sitting idle until 11am or beyond to let a towel deter me from sitting down.

IMO, a towel DOES NOT hold a chair indefinitely.

Your thoughts?
