Hi I love EWR.
I would call Aloha and have them link the two PNRs to show that you are travelling together. This may increase your chances. It may be good to check in a little bit early, but not more than 2 hours before flight time.
Also, it NEVER hurts to ask. Be friendly and just explain the situation and hope for an angel. I don't think your friend's PremEx status will make any difference, but the fact that you are in paid F, might.
