Can I book a connecting flight by calling Air India's reservation center?

I want to fly from DAY-KTM this summer and by the looks of it, Air India would be the cheapest way to get there. The problem is that Air India's website only lets you book flights from airports that they serve, so likely I would have to book a flight from ORD or JFK to DEL and then on to KTM and then book a flight from DAY to ORD/NYC separately on another airline. (I believe United will have pulled out completely from JFK by this summer so if I were to go to New York it would probably be on AA or DL). I did something similar earlier this year when I booked an Asiana flight from ORD-ICN as well as a separate United reservation for DAY-ORD. We had to pick up our checked baggage in T1, take the train to T5, and check in again. I didn't really think to try and call Asiana's reservation center back then though. Anyway, I just looked up flights on AmEx travel's website and it was able to get me a UA DAY-ORD+AI ORD-DEL-KTM itinerary on a single reservation for a few hundred dollars cheaper. I know that on UA you can book a flight to a city they don't serve and they will automatically put you on a partner's flight without any extra work on your part. Does Air India have the capability to do this? If I call them and say, "Please book me on a United flight from DAY to ORD and then on your flights from ORD to DEL and then to KTM.", will they be able to do that as a single reservation?
