Not sure what you meant by "far slower" exactly? Then again, I've never been in the habit of tapping my phone, or contactless card, until after the cashier is finished totaling the order in the first place since I started using NFC. In this situation, I will say that it does make a difference just pulling the phone out of my pocket and tapping it, and then having the transaction approved basically instantly, as much more efficient than using a physical card in the slot, even with CVM waiver.
Well having to wait for it to say Swipe Tap or Insert on the screen is what makes it slower, although I always tapped after the cashier totaled the order too. Still I noticed that it is now slower, although I don't mind at all, just my observation. I'm sure it will speed up over time at Trader Joe's since they just turned on EMV in the last month.
