It is this, with the most recent software update that Trader Joe's installed on their terminals. Prior to the most recent update, the terminal was always on and I could swipe or use Apple Pay while the cashier was ringing up my transaction. After the update, they have to ring up the groceries, then hit credit or whatever, and I start to count to 10 before the terminal is ready to read my card or Apple Pay. And if something goes wrong, the whole register is locked down until the transaction times out and you can try to swipe again.
Even though I am just two blocks from a TJ's, I'm definitely less inclined to go in since the update.
