It was not an "award" ticket; it was a ticket purchased with UR points through the Ultimate Rewards portal. (Whether those tickets are exempt from mileage earnings, I do not know.)
They are not exempt. Hopefully the OP will come back and see s/he should ignore this incorrect advice.

As a reminder, if you don't know the answer, it isn't helpful to make one up. A quick Google search for "earn miles ultimate rewards ticket " would reveal answers to this on some of the beginner - targeted blogs.
