The bottom line is that a 34-minute D-D at ORD is suboptimal but eminently doable. The entire premise of this thread is wrong.

I prefer short MCT's and the flexibility to make my own decisions. People who kvetch that connections are too short should not book them. Sometimes I've got a tough schedule on both ends and I am willing to accept the risk. Other times I don't, so I book a more leisurely schedule.
