A few weeks ago I had trouble getting free bag at AA with Alaska status since my mileage plan number wasn't there but I assume it'd be easier on AS metal.
One point to clarify: Policies state that you can only get benefits from one mileage program on a flight. So you can't, say, credit your AA flights to an AA account while using your AS status to get free bags.
