It's unfortunate, but very much a hard lesson with a simple solution for all. Even if a card is cancelled, hang onto it until everything charged with it has been flown. Doesn't need to be cluttering your wallet, but needs to be somewhere with other documents.

that really is poor advice I'm afraid. Card issuers ask you to destroy a card after it has been cancelled or closed for very good reason. Numbers are often still allowed for a time after a replacement card has been issued if the original was damaged rather than stolen - but if you ignore the request to destroy the original you will be liable for any fraudulent transactions. What you can get is a letter from the issuer confirming the card was cancelled or replaced.
