The partially flown thing is not true. However most I fares don't allow rerouting, so the reroute you are trying to achieve pretty much means new fare calculation. I don't think £5k is too unrealistic in the scenario you describe.

Have a look at how much a new one way would be. Could be substantially less, especially when you also look at other airlines.
