I'm thinking because they can more revenue selling AUS - US and US - EU separately, especially with increased demand on the Australia to US routes, and increased competition from Australia to Europe... A decade ago, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar didn't fly to Australia much/at all, not to mention China Southern, China Eastern, Vietnam etc. all picking up slices of the pie
